Who We Are
The Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Institute (AFDI) is a public institution established by the Chinese government under the APEC Finance Ministers’ Process to advance regional capacity building. AFDI is the first institution established by the Chinese government under the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to promote regional capacity building. It is hosted by and shares the same leadership and core function team with the Shanghai National Accounting Institute (SNAI) affiliated with the Ministry of Finance of China.
The development of AFDI stems from the Chinese government’s long-term practice of promoting regional cooperation. In 2001, under the leadership of the Chinese government, the APEC Finance and Development Program (AFDP) was established within the framework of the APEC Finance Ministers’ Process, with the aim of promoting regional capacity building through this platform. In November 2004, to further advance this work, the Chinese government decided to establish the Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Center (AFDC) on the basis of AFDP. In November 2014, in response to new regional needs for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the financial and economic fields, the Chinese government announced the upgrading of AFDC into the Asia-Pacific Finance and Development Institute (AFDI).
Our Work
Short-term International Capacity Building and Workshops
Backed by the strong support of the Chinese government and a wide network of international partners, AFDI brings together extensive bilateral and multilateral resources to address the most pressing issues in finance and development across the region. Through a dynamic portfolio of short-term international training and capacity-building programs tailored for developing economies, AFDI has become a trusted platform for advancing knowledge sharing, strengthening professional expertise, and fostering meaningful regional collaboration.
Master’s Programs for Developing Economies
Since 2015, AFDI / SNAI offered a Master of Professional Accounting Program for young financial and economic officials from developing countries.
To date, the program has trained 279 international students from 36 developing economies across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania, nurturing future leaders in global finance and development.
